Hey, all you necrofowliacs! Welcome to the next installment of this “Dead Duck” episode, “ALL ALONG THE LUNCH COUNTER”, or, “All Quiet on the Western Omelette!” Here’s your trivia fix:
- I really love the visual storytelling of this page. In some stories where it’s pretty dialogue-intensive, I sometimes resort to talking heads with little action. But with this scene, I wanted it to be cinematic, showing the slow progression of events that gradually unspools into one of the most significant moments in world history.
- It was a real trick drawing the car carrying Franz and his wife. I studied a photo of the actual vehicle, then attempted to render it in my own style. Inevitably, I succumbed to a more rigid design than I otherwise would have drawn if this were something I came up with myself. Cars are always hard for me to draw.
- Much as I didn’t want to get too exaggerated in Gavrilo’s design, the deeper he got into the action of the story, the more my drawing of him looked like Little Richard on a coke binge.
See you on the next page!

You know, as much as I love your dialouge and written jokes, your cinematic moments, where the pictures do the talking are great.
Thanks! I really appreciate hearing that. It’s much more of a challenge to tell a story non-verbally!
