I tend to work artistically backwards.  Rather than using a model to design my characters, I often find friends that kind of look like my characters, then dress them up to really resemble them.  In the case with my friend Aprylle, her broad smile and wild, curly hair made me think of my character Cholly.  So, with a handful of second hand accessories and a can of red hairspray, Aprylle became Cholly.  I love how these shots came out, though I wish I'd found a more natural looking red hairspray.  This color makes me think of Ronald McDonald.
